A password-protected directory or area is a folder that can be accessed only when a username and a password are provided, so no unauthorized individuals can see its content. This feature may be used for the main folder of a specific website or just for a particular subfolder depending on your requirements. As an example, when you are creating a new Internet site and you do not want people to see it before it's ready, you might want to limit the access to it completely, whereas if you want only some individuals to be able to access certain files, you could password-protect only a certain folder, while the remaining portion of the Internet site can be seen by everybody. In any case, a “403 Forbidden” error page shall appear in the event that the login details the visitor enters aren't correct. Even a direct link to a file will not work if any folder above it is password-protected.

Password Protected Directories in Shared Hosting

Setting up a password-protected area will take just a couple of mouse clicks and a few seconds when you host your sites in a shared hosting account with us. You won't need to do anything complex - you'll need to choose a domain/subdomain, to select which folder under it has to be secured, and then to type the login name and password which will be used to access that folder. If a number of individuals require their own login details, there won't be a problem to create a number of different usernames with access to the same exact folder. All secured folders will appear with a padlock icon in the File Manager section, so you shall always know where this feature is active. If you want to turn off the protection function for any folder, you can disable it from the same section of the CP where you have enabled it.
